Symbolic Sleep Out

Fundraising for Veterans’ Welfare

An opportunity to sleep out under the stars at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on ANZAC Eve and get a glimpse, albeit a safe one of what digger’s experience during service.

For so many people, going to Gallipoli to experience sleeping on site overnight and waking up to the ANZAC Day ceremony would be a dream experience. Due to restrictions, monetary or health reasons this may simply not be possible. Thanks to Currumbin RSL and major supporting partner National Trusts’ Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary you will have the opportunity to do this and sleep overnight at the sanctuary with 100% of profits raised from ticket sales going directly to Veterans’ welfare.

Anne Stovin, Currumbin RSL CEO explains; “we want to give the Gold Coast community the opportunity to commemorate ANZAC Day in different ways by offering a variety of events in the lead up. With the help of the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary we are including the Symbolic Sleep Out on the eve of ANZAC Day, we hope people will connect with this moment in history and get a glimpse into the sacrifices made on behalf of the freedom we appreciate today”.

Symbolic Sleep Out guests will have access to the sanctuary on April 24 and prime parking at the sanctuary available only to ticket holders. On ANZAC Day ticket holders will have exclusive access to a reserved area on the beach with a bird’s eye view of the stage and ceremonial area

Where your ticket money is going

The Currumbin RSL Veterans’ Support Centre (VSC) and Soldier On are working together to support Australian service men and women who have been wounded, physically or psychologically and their families.

The VSC has been in operation since 1998 with two paid staff and over 20 volunteers, covering every arm of the Australian Defense Force.  In the past five years the VSC has accessed over $9.5M in entitlements for Veterans from all across the Gold Coast and northern NSW. In the past 12 months they have clocked over 5,000 volunteer hours in home, hospital and respite care visits.

In the on-going relationship between Soldier On and Currumbin RSL, the Club has brought a clinical psychologist, Brett Rufus, under its fold. Brett worked for Soldier On in Canberra and has now relocated to Queensland and will work out of the Club’s Veterans’ Support Centre on Monday to Wednesday each week and is available for referrals. Experienced in supporting those in the Defense community, Brett will offer evidenced-based psychological treatments to contemporary veterans and their families.

There is breakfast (post dawn service) both at the sanctuary and at Currumbin RSL.  We have been fortunate enough that community minded businesses have donated bottles of water and small snacks for all our sleep out guests for the early morning!
