Australia Remembers – Resting Ashes at Sea

The delivery of the ashes of Reginald and Betty Manthey to sea by surfboat crew as part of the ANZACDay Ceremony held at Currumbin Beach 25/04/2014.

Reg was the last survivor from the crew of the HMAS YARRA sunk by the Japanese south of Java on March 4 1942. A heroic effort by her crew who fought against overwhelming might in an effort to protect their convoy. Only 34 Yarra crewmen survived the sinking, 21 of them died of wounds, exposure and exhaustion in the 5 days that followed before they were picked up by a passing Dutch submarine.
